You have a ventilation/heating/air conditioning system, but don’t know how to properly maintain it? For your systems to stay efficient and functional for as long as possible, it’s important to do maintenance on them. This article will give you many recommendations from our specialists for the maintenance of the various elements of the many types of systems available at Lysair.

For your air filter

The air filter is positioned differently depending on the system that you own.

For a central system: the air filter is generally located near the furnace, identified by “filter and/or airflow”.

For a wall-mounted system: the filter is located under the interior unit’s front panel.

No matter the type of system, the filter must be replaced or cleaned at regular intervals for maximum efficiency. A dirty filter can restrict airflow, which can cause the evaporator to freeze if it’s in A/C mode or overheat if it’s in heating mode, reducing the equipment’s efficiency and lifespan.

Here are our recommendations depending on filter type :

1-inch filter: Replace every 2 months

2-inch filter: Replace every 3 months

4 and 5-inch filter: Replace every 6 months

Washable filter (wall-mounted system): Clean every 2 months

If your system is equipped with an air conditioning unit or a heat pump

It’s very important to clean the condenser (exterior radiator) all around the device with a watering hose to dislodge accumulated pollen and/or sand and dust. Using water is without danger because the device is designed to work under exterior weather. Shut down the device through the electric breaker before cleaning, and switch the breaker back on after cleaning. However, we strongly recommend having cleaning and maintenance be done by one of our certified refrigeration technicians.

N.B.: You need to switch off the main breaker switch if your device is not used for long periods of time (example: winter, holidays, etc.)

If your system is equipped with a humidifier

It should only be active during winter or during the heating period. Never at the same time as the air conditioning (a humidifier will increase the humidity percentage, whereas an air conditioner will remove it). The cartridge must be replaced each year before winter.

N.B.: Observer the proper position of the humidifier switch (WINTER or SUMMER)). It’s also recommended to close the humidifier’s water valve during summer.

Thermostat maintenance

The thermostat does not require any particular maintenance, except for battery replacement if needed. Clean with a wet cloth. Never use a spraying bottle directly on the thermostat.

Air exchanger maintenance

The air exchanger must be checked and cleaned each season. To do so, simply open the panel, remove the filters, and clean with water. Let dry and put back in place.

N.B.: when the air exchanger’s door is opened, the system shuts off automatically.

Grates and registers cleaning

Grates and registers can be removed for routine cleaning. Clean in warm and lightly soapy water. After drying, put it back in place.

N.B.: all floor grates must be in place for the system’s proper functioning and balancing. IMPORTANT: never close more than 15% of all grates (example: we can close all basement grates as long as all the other grates are open).

About the warranty

Systems are guaranteed by the manufacturer under certain conditions, depending on the chosen and installed model. Be advised that all modifications made to the system without our consent will void your warranty.

Before placing a service call about a non-functioning unit

Check the following points :

  • Is the filter clean and in good shape (Furnace, air exchanger, humidifier)?
  • Are the breakers in your electrical panel in the “ON” position?
  • Is the wall circuit-breaker near the exterior system in the “ON” position?
  • Is the thermostat “ON” in heating or air conditioning mode and are the batteries good?
  • Are the air return grates cleared and the intake grates open?
  • Did you read the user manual for your system to properly understand how it works?
